OER Description:

A series of slides (in PDF format or as Powerpoint files with slides and notes). These OERs describe a number of laboratory techniques used to detect genetic mutations, and in these cases, are used in the study of sickle cell disease and haemoglobin disorders.

This is an open educational resource part of the ‘SCOOTER Project’ funded in the UK by the Jisc/HEA Open Educational Resource Programme. We aim to support the teaching of sickle cell and raise awareness of the condition.

OER Description:

A video resource describing a common laboratory technique for detecting genetic mutations, and in our example we look at sickle cell disease. ASO stands for ‘allele-specific oligonucleotide’ hybridisation. Simply, a short piece of DNA is synthesised to act like a probe that can then detect certain mutations in patient samples.
